Green Way Packers – Things to Think of When You Move

• Drain the gas from tanks of mowers and other gardening equipment. Movers will not carry items with gas in them.
• Dispose responsibly all flammable liquids, paints and corrosive items – If you are moving locally, take all personal aerosols with you in your vehicle.
• Sort through your valuable items. Either rent a safety deposit box at the bank for temporary storage, or keep them in your possession at all times. Alternatively, if you have family close by, leave these items in their safe keeping until you are organized again.
• Don’t forget to recall any items lent to friends and neighbours! Likewise, give back things you have borrowed!
• If you have plenty of notice for your move, run down the fridge and freezer. This way you are less likely to have damaged and spoilt food.
• Create a box of essentials for moving day – call it a survival kit! A kettle, tea, coffee, sugar, dried milk, toilet roll, flashlight, paper towel, toiletries, towels, disposable cups, plates and cutlery etc.
• Moving home is the perfect time to de-clutter. There are plenty of non-profit organizations that would benefit from your unwanted items. Don’t fill the landfill! Recycle where you can!
• House plants are not great movers, they tend to wilt and suffer with the changes. This can be eliminated somewhat by early preparation. Collect fruit boxes from the grocery store and line them with old tea towels. These boxes are stong, vented and have low sides – very often the height of standard plant pot. Put the plants inside the boxes and place in well lit and fairly warm area. Water them regularly, but do not saturate. This way they get used to a slightly different environment. On the day of the move, load them last into either the moving truck, or your vehicle. If the day is extremely cold, wrap them in bubble wrap as extra insulation.
• Electronic leads. How many times do electrical cables and leads get jumbled in a box before a move, only to have the owner scratching their head wondering what belongs to what?! The easy way to eliminate this is to spend a few moments attaching white labels to one end of the cable, with the item the lead belongs to written in permanent marker. Masking or painters tape will work just as well.
• If you are dismantling furniture prior to a move, use Ziploc bags to place nuts, bolts, screws and small parts. Tape the bag to a piece of the dismantled item.
• Ziploc bags are great to use for going around and collecting batteries from electrical goods. Remember it is advisable to remove batteries from items going into storage.
• Use another Ziploc bag to collect up all wall hanging hooks and nails – you will have them at hand for the new home.
• Locate all your important documents and keep them in one place – keep them on you at all times during the move. Passports are always the favourite to be mislaid!
• If not already done, create a file to keep on your person, of all medical records, prescriptions and insurance documents.
• Make sure your home insurance is up to date and your move is covered. High end and singularly valuable items will have to be noted by the insurance company to ensure proper coverage.
• Create a floor plan of your new home, if possible, and try to place where your furniture will go. This will help the movers on moving day itself. However, you may be surprised to find that not all your furniture will fit into your new home. If this is the case, consider a garage sale to sell off unwanted items, or donating to local charities. Some will come and pick up your goods for you.
• Back up your computers. If something happens to them, at least your information is safe and secure.
• To save time and money, collapse and secure all gym equipment for the mover.
• To aid your packing team – use post-it notes and stick them on anything that you do not want packed. Use a colour coded system if goods are being split i.e. storage, donation, new home, rental etc.
• On the moving day itself, help the movers to minimize accidents, by making sure that all sidewalks, driveways and other approaches are clear or snow, ice and other possible obstructions. Provide ample parking for the truck and trim back any wayward bushes or overhanging branches of trees as the movers carry large items and very often partial view is obscured.
